Economies and Diseconomies of Scale - Case Study + Questions
This newly written case study, which is based around the fictional ‘Sam’s Sandwich Shop’, comes in a student-friendly manner to ensure that learners can access content. Whilst GCSE students will gain understanding of the different types of economies and diseconomies of scale, A-level students will appreciate the nuances within the text which prompt further discussion. This resource exposes students to all types of economies of scale whilst also recognising the diseconomies of scale that can exist when firms expand. The factors which determine whether a business experiences economies or diseconomies are also discussed.
As a successful and experienced teacher of A-level and GCSE Business Studies I have found this type of resource hugely beneficial when getting students to understand new theory. Applying learning to a case study written specifically for the purpose helps students to contexualise learning which leads to greater knowledge retention and understanding. 3x follow-up questions help students to further consolidate learning. This approach has boosted exam performance and significantly increased grades.
CeFS / DipFS Student Support Resource Link Map (LIBF Financial Studies)
Resources available on the LIBF website have been painstakingly mapped into a simple-to-use Excel file. This contains direct web links to student support resources provided on the LIBF website for the Financial Studies CeFS / DipFS programmes. Students simply have to click on the link and can access the following resources for each and every topic over the 4x Units (Unit 1 FCIS, Unit 2 FCMLT, Unit 3 SIF and Unit 4 SFSS):
Textbook
Vocabulary Game
Quiz
Key Terms
Further Reading/Activities
As a successful and experienced teacher of LIBF Financial Studies I have found that giving students access to this Excel file has enabled them to quickly and efficiently access revision resources provided by the exam board. This has boosted exam performance and significantly increased grades as a result. You may also consider asking students to complete the quiz on each topic as part of homework assignments.
An LIBF login is required to access resources. Students are given this when they are registered onto the course.

As a teacher you may choose to give students the mock within class or give to students to independently plan/write responses in their own time.
Teachers can use the mark scheme to mark students’ responses. The ‘indicative content’ section has been written so that it is also possible to give the mark scheme to students to self-assess their work.
The model answers provide a guide for students how to structure their responses. You may wish to give these model answers to students before they write responses themselves or afterwards so they can see how their responses compare.
